Manchester United's pursuit of West Ham's Mateus Fernandes has hit a serious snag, with the midfielder's agent Jorge Mendes actively brokering a switch to Real Madrid instead.

The Red Devils have already secured a deal for Atalanta's Ederson Silva and were keen to add Fernandes to their midfield recruitment drive. Yet the Portuguese international—available for £80million—now faces competition from the Spanish and European powerhouses.

Fernandes has reportedly been extremely enthusiastic about joining Old Trafford, and United's director of football Jason Wilcox is understood to be personally invested in bringing him to Manchester this summer.
