Mourinho's Real Madrid Return Could Trigger Dalot Raid on Manchester United

Real Madrid's pursuit of Jose Mourinho as their next manager could have significant ramifications for Manchester United, with Diogo Dalot emerging as a prime target should the Portuguese tactician take the helm at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho currently manages Benfica, but according to reports, Madrid are keen to bring him back to the club where he previously held the top job between 2010 and 2013. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is understood to be the driving force behind the move, though some within the club's hierarchy harbour reservations about a reunion. Nonetheless, with Perez wielding ultimate authority at the Spanish giants, a deal could well materialise.

Should Mourinho's appointment go through, securing Dalot appears a distinct possibility. The 27-year-old caught Madrid's attention last summer as a potential acquisition, with his adaptability across both flanks proving particularly attractive to European heavyweights. Manchester United's director of football Jason Wilcox may be open to a sale at season's end, particularly given the salary implications of offering Dalot his next contract extension.

Dalot arrived at Old Trafford from FC Porto in 2018 for €22 million and remains contracted until 2028, with a further year available as an option. Notably, it was Mourinho himself who orchestrated that original transfer, describing the defender at the time as possessing "physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality" alongside the hallmarks of Porto's academy system.

The situation at Madrid adds further intrigue. The club bolstered their full-back ranks last summer by acquiring Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and Alvaro Carreras from Benfica. However, Alexander-Arnold's campaign has been underwhelming, whilst veteran Dani Carvajal – out of contract at season's end – faces an uncertain future. Carreras, still just 23, has impressed as the club's primary left-back option.

With Madrid potentially needing defensive reinforcements and Dalot enjoying a stellar season as United push for a top-five Premier League finish, a reunion between the player and his former manager would represent a logical move for all parties. Competition between Dalot and Alexander-Arnold for the right-back berth would certainly sharpen Madrid's defensive prowess.
