The wheels are turning at Old Trafford as INEOS and Michael Carrick's backroom staff weigh up a shock reunion with Álvaro Carreras. The Real Madrid left-back finds himself surplus to requirements in the Spanish capital following the club's completion of Marc Cucurella's switch from Chelsea, and United are quietly assessing whether the former youth prospect might be available.

No formal bid has landed on the table just yet, but United want to get a proper read on Carreras' situation and the likelihood of moving him on. With Cucurella primed to slot straight into Mourinho's starting XI, the 22-year-old Spanish defender faces a battle for minutes at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid's thinking appears straightforward: they're willing to listen to offers in the region of €25-30m.
