Diomande Sets Sights on Madrid as Liverpool's Pursuit Hits a Wall

Liverpool's hopes of landing one of Europe's hottest young talents have taken a significant blow, with Yan Diomande seemingly set on a move to Real Madrid rather than Anfield.

The RB Leipzig winger, who has impressed greatly this season and is currently representing Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup, has caught the attention of Europe's elite. PSG and Liverpool have emerged as the two clubs most seriously pursuing the 19-year-old, particularly as a potential successor to Mohamed Salah at Anfield.

However, Spanish sources indicate that Diomande's heart lies elsewhere. According to El Debate, Madrid's chief scout Juni Calafat has been monitoring the teenager's performances at the World Cup, and the player harbours a strong desire to join the Spanish giants rather than either of his other suitors.

Fenway Sports Group has already seen an initial bid rejected by Leipzig, but Liverpool are reportedly preparing to come back with an improved offer. The German club is thought to be demanding around €120 million plus add-ons to part with their prize asset. Yet such financial muscle may prove insufficient if Diomande remains committed to his Madrid ambitions.

Real Madrid's primary target for the right-wing position remains Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, though Diomande has emerged as a credible alternative. PSG, under Luis Enrique's management, are also keen to bolster their attacking ranks, with the club's hierarchy keen to strengthen the European champions' prospects.

The intrigue surrounding this transfer saga raises questions about Madrid's actual interest, however. Jose Mourinho's squad already boasts considerable attacking depth. Vinicius Junior operates as the established left-winger, Kylian Mbappe leads the line centrally, and Rodrygo – despite facing a lengthy absence due to a serious knee injury – remains a key option. Franco Mastantuono could be loaned out, whilst Brahim Diaz figures as a backup option. Mourinho may also deploy Bernardo Silva on the right flank, and still has Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham to accommodate within his system.

Diomande's profile, whilst undoubtedly promising, presents certain considerations. At just 19 years old with one standout campaign in the Bundesliga to his name, a €120 million investment represents a significant gamble. Notably, Madrid previously had the opportunity to sign him during his time at Leganes and chose not to pursue that avenue.

Should the Spanish club genuinely seek a proven right-winger this summer to bolster their LaLiga and Champions League credentials, a more established performer – such as Olise – would likely represent a more prudent allocation of resources.
