Real Madrid Squad Backs Klopp Over Mourinho as Managerial Search Heats Up

The Bernabéu dressing room appears to have made its preference abundantly clear: Jurgen Klopp over Jose Mourinho, according to reports emerging from the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid have endured a chaotic campaign at managerial level. Florentino Perez wielded the axe on Xabi Alonso in January, bringing in former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa as his replacement—though whether the Spaniard arrived as a permanent fixture or temporary caretaker remained murky from the outset. Either way, it's now evident that Arbeloa will be departing, leaving Perez to weigh up his options for the summer overhaul.

The Portuguese tactician currently plying his trade at Benfica has emerged as the club president's favoured candidate, according to reporting from The Athletic's David Ornstein. Perez has previous experience working with Mourinho and clearly fancies another crack at that partnership.

Klopp, meanwhile, continues to generate interest, though significant question marks linger over his appetite for a return to the dugout following his Liverpool exit.

Fabrizio Romano has provided clarity on where matters stand. Speaking via his YouTube channel, the transfer guru explained that Mourinho is "ready to go" should the Madrid job materialise, but everything hinges on Perez's willingness to make the move. As for Klopp, the ball sits squarely in the German's court—Real Madrid will only pursue him if he voluntarily re-enters the managerial marketplace.

"It is going to be a very special and busy summer at Real Madrid," Romano stated. "We know there are several situations, players leaving, players arriving, players returning, and also the manager. For Jurgen Klopp, either he puts himself back in the market as a manager, or Real Madrid will not disturb his agreement with the Red Bull group. So it depends on Klopp. On the other side, Jose Mourinho is ready to go to Real Madrid, but that depends on Florentino Perez's decision."

However, the Madrid squad appears to have other ideas. Spanish outlets report that the dressing room "doesn't want" Mourinho, with the Portuguese boss proving "not well received by many players." The players favour someone less incendiary—a manager capable of fostering better relationships within the squad rather than rocking the boat.

The players haven't forgotten Mourinho's fractious history with Madrid stalwarts. His previous clashes with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, and Pepe loom large in their collective memory. Klopp, by contrast, represents a different proposition entirely: a less combative figure whose tactical approach and man-management style the squad believes would prove a superior fit.

"They prefer someone less controversial, someone with a closer relationship with the players, someone who won't cause problems," the reports suggest. "Klopp has a less aggressive approach and a style of play that the squad believes is a much better fit."

Yet for all the players' collective voice, the ultimate decision remains Perez's alone to make.
