Valdano Torpedoes Klopp to Madrid: "It Seems Impossible"

The prospect of Jurgen Klopp taking the Real Madrid hot seat appears to be slipping further away, with club legend Jorge Valdano casting serious doubt on whether the arrangement could ever work.

Despite persistent reports suggesting the former Liverpool boss had struck a deal to replace Alvaro Arbeloa come summer, Valdano has poured cold water on the speculation. The ex-Madrid manager and sporting director reckons the timescale simply doesn't add up.

"He needs a year to build a team, especially to instil the physical intensity required for his style of play to take shape, and asking Real Madrid to give him a year seems excessive to me; it seems impossible," Valdano explained via Mundo Deportivo.

The situation at the Bernabéu has been turbulent of late. Arbeloa himself only arrived in January after Xabi Alonso's departure from Bayer Leverkusen, with that move shrouded in talk of dressing room friction over selection and tactical decisions. Now it appears the Spaniard is facing the exit door himself.

Valdano has thrown several alternative names into the ring. Mauricio Pochettino, he suggests, remains a compelling option—the Argentine has come close to the Madrid job twice before, which tells its own story about the club's regard for him.

Didier Deschamps, the World Cup-winning France manager, also merits consideration in Valdano's view. "It could work for me because we have Tchouameni here, we have Camavinga – we need someone who knows how to make the most of him – and there's Mbappé, let's not forget. And we're talking about a World Cup-winning manager," he said.

A potential return for Jose Mourinho? That ship has sailed. "That's water under the bridge," Valdano remarked. As for Lionel Scaloni, the Real Madrid legend harbours reservations about handing the Argentine his first club position at such an elite institution, despite his World Cup pedigree.

Yet not everyone is looking abroad for solutions. Fernando Morientes, another Madrid icon, has made a passionate pitch for Raúl—the club's youth academy director—to be given the nod.

"Which coach would I propose to the club? The one I proposed at the beginning of last season, the one who was in the youth academy last year, Raúl," Morientes told COPE. "If you're going to give someone young a chance…"

He remained perplexed by Arbeloa's appointment, particularly given Raúl's presence on the club's staff. "Why did Arbeloa get pushed ahead of Raúl? Well, I have no idea, it surprised me a lot. Raúl's departure from the club really surprised me," Morientes added.
