Klopp Eyes Liverpool Midfield Star as Real Madrid Overhaul Takes Shape

Jurgen Klopp's sabbatical from the dugout may be coming to an end sooner than expected, with Spanish media suggesting the German tactician could be headed for the Bernabéu.

The 57-year-old has been out of management since his nine-year tenure at Liverpool concluded in summer 2024, subsequently taking on a consultancy role as Red Bull's Global Head of Football in early 2025. He'd publicly stated his desire for a lengthy break and hinted retirement from coaching was a genuine possibility.

Yet the rumour mill in Spain is working overtime. Real Madrid, currently under interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa following Xabi Alonso's January departure, are said to be considering Klopp as a potential long-term solution—despite Arbeloa's own struggles with reported unrest among the squad's senior figures.

According to Spanish reports, Klopp isn't simply interested in the job. He's already sketching out his transfer wishlist, with two high-profile acquisitions in mind.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and Tottenham defender Cristian Romero top his shopping list, valued collectively at around €200 million (£174m). Spanish media claims Klopp views the Argentine midfielder as perfectly aligned with his tactical demands: a player capable of controlling the tempo, reading the game intelligently, and bringing the kind of competitive edge his systems demand.

To make financial room for such investments, the reports suggest Klopp has proposed selling Rodrygo and Eduardo Camavinga, framing the moves as "strategic sales" necessary to construct a more balanced and competitive Madrid outfit.

It remains uncertain whether Klopp will actually accept the Real Madrid position. The club are also exploring alternatives, with Unai Emery and Joachim Low mentioned as contingency options. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has also been approached, though he's reportedly unmoved by the prospect, preferring to focus entirely on the summer's World Cup campaign.

Given Klopp's well-documented friction with Liverpool's ownership structure, whether he'd genuinely fancy wrestling with Real Madrid's internal politics is another matter entirely.
