Klopp Circles Madrid as Arbeloa's Grip Loosens Following Getafe Stumble

Jurgen Klopp could well be heading to the Santiago Bernabéu this summer, with Real Madrid's hierarchy reportedly eyeing the former Liverpool manager as their next chief following mounting pressure on Álvaro Arbeloa.

The German, who departed Anfield at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, currently holds the position of Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull GmbH. However, he finds himself sufficiently captivated by Madrid's long-term plans to consider making the switch to Spain's capital this summer.

Arbeloa, installed as Madrid boss in January 2026 following Xabi Alonso's exit, faces an increasingly precarious situation. The club released no details regarding contract length, but it's understood the Spaniard must land LaLiga and/or Champions League silverware to retain his post beyond the summer window.

That pressure intensified dramatically on Monday evening when Madrid capitulated to Getafe at the Bernabéu, losing 1-0 in La Liga. The result leaves Carlo Ancelotti's former side four points adrift of Barcelona at the summit – a chasm that feels like a canyon for an institution of Madrid's stature.

Spanish media outlet Marca pulled no punches in their assessment, describing the loss as a "crisis" and noting the deteriorating atmosphere within the stadium. The publication highlighted fan discontent, with sections of the support now directing their frustration beyond the dugout and towards club president Florentino Pérez, chanting for his resignation.

"The team isn't responding, the feeling is getting worse week after week, and the atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu keeps deteriorating," Marca observed. "When the focus shifts from solely the coach and players to the presidency, the message is clear: distrust in the project is growing."

Four fixtures loom large in Arbeloa's survival stakes: a La Liga clash against Celta de Vigo on Friday, a two-legged Champions League showdown with Manchester City, and the Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid later this month. Madrid have reached the Champions League round of 16, but silverware remains elusive.

The Spanish publication concluded ominously: "Time is running out for Arbeloa. The manager faces a crucial month in which he could lose the two titles he's still in contention for. March threatens to become the end of a season that began ambitiously under Xabi Alonso and is now heading towards a bleak conclusion" – a fate that befell interim manager Santiago Solari in 2018.
