Mikel Tears Into Mourinho Over 'Clumsy' Vinicius Response as Benfica Boss Faces Racism Row Backlash

Jose Mourinho's response to the racism row surrounding Vinicius Junior has drawn sharp criticism from one of his former proteges, with John Obi Mikel suggesting the Benfica boss has seriously overstepped the mark.

The controversy erupted last week when Real Madrid travelled to face Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League play-off. Vinicius Junior settled the tie with a solitary goal in a 1-0 victory, but the Brazilian's celebration triggered an ugly incident involving Benfica defender Gianluca Prestianni, who stands accused of racial abuse.

Rather than offering unequivocal support to Vinicius, Mourinho instead questioned the winger's conduct, suggesting he ought to have celebrated "in a respectful way." The manager further defended his club's record on racism, referencing the legendary Eusebio as evidence that Benfica harbours no prejudice.

"When he was arguing about racism I told him the biggest person in the history of this club was black," Mourinho explained at the time, before adding that similar incidents occur wherever Vinicius plays.

Prestianni has since received a suspension for Wednesday's return fixture, but Mikel—speaking on his Obi One Podcast—has laid into his former boss for what he describes as a tone-deaf intervention.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder argued that Mourinho should have simply stated that racism has no place at the club whilst allowing investigations to run their course, rather than pivoting focus onto Vinicius's behaviour. Mikel believes the experienced Portuguese tactician recognises his error but has yet to offer a public apology.

"He will be the first to know 'I've f*cked up here'. He is a smart, smart guy," Mikel reflected, adding that nobody who has worked under Mourinho would question his principles regarding discrimination.

Mikel expects his former manager to eventually acknowledge the misstep, describing the initial comments as a "massive, massive, huge mistake" born from post-match emotion and poor judgment. He contends that a seasoned operator of Mourinho's calibre should have chosen his words far more carefully.
