Real Madrid Eye Fernandez as 'Guaranteed Signing' While Chelsea Star Keeps Options Open

Real Madrid's interest in Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez shows no signs of cooling as the transfer market gears up for the summer, with Spanish outlets now labelling the Argentine as a "guaranteed signing" for the Bernabéu.

Fernandez arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 for a then-British record £106.8m from Benfica, and has since established himself as one of the club's standout performers. This season alone, the World Cup winner has chipped in with 12 goals and five assists across all competitions, adding another goal and three assists during Chelsea's FIFA Club World Cup campaign over the summer.

Yet despite his individual brilliance, Chelsea's broader struggles have been well documented. Since Todd Boehly's consortium took over in May 2022, the club has invested over £1billion but languishes sixth in the Premier League table, having cycled through managers in search of stability.

That instability has apparently caught the attention of Madrid, with reports from nine days ago suggesting Fernandez was "close to joining" the La Liga outfit come summer. The midfielder himself has done little to quash such speculation, recently telling interviewers: "I don't know, there are eight games left and then the FA Cup. Then there's the World Cup, and then we'll see."

More intriguingly, in a weekend interview with Marcos Giles and Infobae, Fernandez stated: "I really like Madrid. It's similar to Buenos Aires."

Mundo Deportivo's assessment, picked up by Sport Witness, suggests Fernandez possesses all the hallmarks of a Madrid success story—a player of character who builds quick rapport with supporters and carries natural leadership qualities. The report drew comparison to Fede Valverde, though it acknowledged a potential stumbling block: Fernandez's strong personality and ego could prove challenging in a dressing room already populated by similarly forceful characters.

Madrid would reportedly need to part with €100m to secure his services despite him entering the final year of his contract, while simultaneously exploring cheaper midfield alternatives.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Madrid's interest but struck a note of caution about any imminent deal. He stated that Real Madrid "have not yet made a final decision on which midfielder they want to sign," suggesting the club remains in the exploratory phase rather than pursuing a concrete move.

Romano added that Fernandez has insisted he remains focused on Chelsea and upcoming fixtures, with no formal negotiations currently underway between player and club. He emphasised that the midfielder is under a long-term contract and represents a significant investment for the Blues, who retain control of the situation. While a summer departure cannot be entirely ruled out should an enticing opportunity materialise, Chelsea are in no rush to sell.
