Klopp's Madrid Gambit: One Condition Stands Between Him and the Bernabéu

Real Madrid's managerial carousel continues to spin. With Álvaro Arbeloa's tenure already looking decidedly temporary—his opening fixture ended in a Copa del Rey exit to second-tier Albacete—the Spanish powerhouse is already eyeing the summer market for a more permanent solution.

And they're thinking big. According to reports from Germany, Jürgen Klopp has indicated he would be open to taking the job at the Bernabéu, provided the conditions are precisely right. The former Liverpool boss has been out of the dugout since departing Anfield at the end of 2023/24, choosing instead to assume the role of Global Head of Football at Red Bull from the beginning of 2025.

That position suits him well. The workload is considerably lighter than management, affording him the space and breathing room he craved after nine years of relentless intensity at Liverpool. Yet the possibility of managing Real Madrid—one of football's most prestigious clubs—still holds genuine appeal.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Klopp has made clear his position: he would seriously consider a return to the dugout if Madrid make a concrete approach. The German has long harboured a fascination with the club and its history, though his current commitment to the Red Bull project remains strong.

"He is happy at Red Bull and has a strong identification with the Red Bull project," Plettenberg revealed, "but there are at least two projects for which he would return if everything fits: Real Madrid and the German national team."

The emphasis on "if everything fits" is crucial. This is not a manager desperate to return. This is a man with options, weighing them carefully. For now, all eyes turn to the summer of 2026—when Madrid may finally make their move.

In the meantime, Arbeloa remains in situ, though his days appear numbered. Spanish outlets have already moved on from speculation about whether he can succeed, instead focusing on who should replace him. Alongside Klopp, names being discussed include Enzo Maresca, recently sacked by Chelsea, and Zinédine Zidane, though the latter is reportedly waiting for the French national team vacancy.

Real Madrid's struggles have been well documented. After a barren campaign last season under Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso, the club hoped for renaissance under new leadership. Instead, the instability has continued, with Alonso departing just days into this week. It's a far cry from the stability and success that once defined the club.
