Real Madrid's dressing room appears to be fracturing under the strain of a disappointing campaign, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois now publicly signalling his frustration at Kylian Mbappe's approach to the season.

The Belgian stopper has taken issue with the Frenchman's "attitude at certain key moments," according to reports filtering out of Spain. Courtois, who previously urged Jude Bellingham to sharpen up his game, believes collective responsibility must trump individual ambition—a principle he feels Mbappe is flouting.

The underlying grievance appears to centre on Mbappe's apparent fixation with personal goal tallies. Courtois and the senior squad worry that the striker's obsession with accumulating records comparable to Cristiano Ronaldo's legendary tally has compromised his willingness to prioritize the team's welfare. The Belgian has been vocal about championing an ethos rooted in "shared sacrifice," with the clear implication that one man's personal crusade is undermining that philosophy.

It's hardly the backdrop Real Madrid needs. The club sits adrift of Barcelona in La Liga and faces Champions League play-offs just to reach the knockout rounds—hardly the trajectory expected of a club of their stature. The sacking of Xabi Alonso in January, with whispers of dressing room discontent over team selection and tactics, has only intensified the sense of malaise. Alvaro Arbeloa stepped in as interim replacement, though speculation already swirls about his future beyond this season.

Mbappe, to his credit, continues to deliver impressive numbers: 38 goals and five assists across 33 matches in all competitions. Yet statistics alone cannot mask the impression that something fundamental has shifted in the relationship between the player and his teammates.

The plot thickens further with reports suggesting that Mbappe would be the first to request an exit if Real Madrid appoint USA national team coach Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager. The Argentine's arrival would prove controversial within the dressing room, chiefly because Mbappe harbours decidedly negative memories from their time together at Paris Saint-Germain.

This factor is not lost on Real Madrid's decision-makers. With Mbappe serving as a major asset and figurehead at the club, the hierarchy understands that appointing Pochettino carries genuine risk. The prospect of their star striker demanding a transfer is being treated with appropriate seriousness, and that consideration is already dampening the Argentine's candidacy for the role.

In other words, the club is backing away from Pochettino precisely because they fear Mbappe's reaction. It's an extraordinary position to find oneself in—having to discard a managerial candidate to keep your marquee signing onside. Yet that appears to be where Real Madrid currently stands.
