Courtois Breaks Ranks: Real Madrid Goalkeeper Took Vinicius Junior to Task When No One Else Would

There's something rather refreshing about a goalkeeper willing to deliver a few uncomfortable truths to a teammate when everyone else stays diplomatically silent. That's precisely what Thibaut Courtois did with Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid, according to Spanish reports.

The Belgian stopper apparently had the guts to confront the Brazilian directly about his earlier-season struggles—something nobody else in the dressing room was prepared to do. When Vinicius was underperforming, Courtois pulled him aside and made his feelings known, imploring him to drop the off-field controversies and concentrate solely on his responsibilities to the club.

This wasn't a casual chat either. The number one engaged in several conversations with Vinicius in the locker room, hoping to inspire a shift in attitude. And it seems to have worked. The pair eventually had another chat where Courtois acknowledged the improvement and praised Vinicius for taking the criticism on board.

The timing is significant. Vinicius has been in absolutely sparkling form lately, rattling in six goals across his last five outings. Across the entire campaign, he's notched 13 goals and nine assists in 37 appearances across all competitions—a tally that underlines just how important he remains to Bernabéu's plans.

At 25 years old, Vinicius remains a key asset for Real Madrid, though contract negotiations have hit a stumbling block. His deal expires in summer 2027, and talks over a fresh agreement have stalled. The sticking point? The Brazilian wants wages on par with Kylian Mbappé, currently the club's top earner. There's also been speculation he could move on when the market opens.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Vinicius's contract situation might become considerably less fraught following Xabi Alonso's departure from the club earlier in the year. Speaking in January, Romano explained that renewal discussions had effectively paused partly because the relationship between Vinicius and Alonso wasn't particularly rosy.

"If Vinicius Junior's renewal was paused, it's also because the relationship with Xabi Alonso wasn't spectacular," Romano said. "The player wasn't happy with not feeling so important."

According to Romano, Madrid have consistently signalled their desire to keep Vinicius around, whilst the Brazilian had adopted a wait-and-see approach regarding the managerial situation. With fresh coaching arrangements now in place, the landscape has shifted considerably.

"Without Xabi Alonso it will be less complicated," Romano concluded, suggesting that a resolution could be within reach under new management.
