Mourinho Slams Door on Tchouameni Exit as Man Utd's Midfield Hunt Continues

Manchester United's pursuit of Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni has hit a dead end, with Jose Mourinho making abundantly clear that the French midfielder remains a cornerstone of his plans at the Bernabéu.

The prospect of landing Tchouameni at Old Trafford—long considered the ideal solution to replacing Casemiro—now appears firmly off the table. Mourinho views the 24-year-old as indispensable to his squad, putting paid to any hopes INEOS might have harboured of prising him away this summer.

The setback compounds Man Utd's midfield troubles following their failure to secure Mateus Fernandes, who opted for Tottenham instead. While the Red Devils have wrapped up a deal with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, manager Michael Carrick remains keen to bolster his engine room with at least one more addition.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano has consistently reported that Tchouameni represents Man Utd's dream signing—the perfect defensive midfielder to shore up their midfield. Speaking on his YouTube channel in June, Romano explained the club's admiration for the player is genuine. "They super-appreciate the player and they consider him perfect," he said, but noted the twin obstacles blocking any move.

First among these is Real Madrid's unwillingness to entertain offers. The Spanish giants have shown no inclination to open discussions about Tchouameni's departure. Equally problematic is his wages. The Frenchman commands a substantial salary at the Bernabéu, one that United's financial parameters simply won't stretch to match.

"The only way to open doors for Tchouameni to Man Utd after missing out on Mateus Fernandes is to discuss a completely different salary," Romano observed. "At the moment, that's not something that's happening."

With Tchouameni currently representing France at the 2026 World Cup, his stock could hardly be higher. Yet that very success has only reinforced Mourinho's conviction that he cannot afford to let such a talent slip away.

According to El Debate, the Portuguese manager has explicitly stated his desire to retain both Tchouameni and Federico Valverde—the pair considered essential to his vision. Though Tchouameni's contract expires in two years and Madrid are already discussing a renewal, the club would only contemplate selling should a higher priority emerge and finances necessitate action.

For Carrick and United's recruitment team, the message is unmistakable: look elsewhere.
