Real Madrid Balk at Arsenal's €80m Calafiori Valuation, Turn to Cucurella Instead

Real Madrid have discovered what Arsenal's asking price is for Riccardo Calafiori—and it's proven too rich for their blood.

The Italian centre-back, who can operate as a left-back, emerged as Jose Mourinho's first-choice defensive recruit at the Bernabéu. However, when the newly appointed Real Madrid manager learned that Arsenal valued their 24-year-old at €80million (£69.2m, $92.8m), the Spanish giants decided to look elsewhere.

According to Spanish journalist Sergio Valentin, Calafiori topped Mourinho's wish list due to his ability to function both as a centre-back and left-back—exactly the kind of versatility the former Roma boss craves. But with Arsenal standing firm on their valuation, Real Madrid weren't prepared to meet the fee.

That rejection opened the door for plan B: Marc Cucurella. The Chelsea left-back, who will join Real Madrid in a deal reaching £52million, was never the original target. Yet when the Cucurella option became available, everything moved swiftly. The 27-year-old Spaniard, considered among the world's elite left-backs, will represent his country at the 2026 World Cup. His versatility—capable of playing as a left-back or left wing-back, and having featured 21 times as a centre-back across his career—made him an attractive fallback option.

The pursuit of Calafiori had stalled earlier in June when transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that whilst Real Madrid had held talks with the player's representatives weeks prior, no direct contact had been established with Arsenal. At that point, the Calafiori option appeared far from concrete.

It now transpires that Madrid did make a move, only to be deterred by the financial gulf between their valuation and Arsenal's demands. Calafiori, who arrived at the Premier League champions from Bologna in summer 2024, remains contracted to the club until 2029.

Mourinho's original shortlist also included Josko Gvardiol, the Croatia international at Manchester City. However, the defender has opted to sign a fresh contract with the Premier League side rather than make the switch to the Spanish capital.

With his top two targets unavailable at the asking price or through their own decisions, Mourinho settled on Cucurella—a move that came together remarkably quickly once Real Madrid committed to the pursuit.
