Real Madrid have ramped up their pursuit of Arsenal's Piero Hincapie, with the Spanish giants holding talks with the Ecuador international's representatives as Jose Mourinho hunts for defensive reinforcements at the Bernabeu.

The newly-appointed Madrid boss is keen on securing a left-footed centre-back capable of deputising at left-back, a position he's already addressed through the summer signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. With Alvaro Carreras also available for that flank, Mourinho continues to scout the market for additional options.

Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori remains on Madrid's wishlist, but the Italian defender's employers have made abundantly clear he's not for sale. This has steered attention towards Hincapie, who impressed during a 2025-26 loan campaign at the Emirates. Like Calafiori, the Bayer Leverkusen man offers versatility across the backline and carries a €60 million (£51.8m) price tag.

Reports indicate Hincapie harbours a long-held ambition to represent the thirteen-time European champions, a dream he's nurtured since childhood in Ecuador. The 26-year-old is currently featuring for his national side at the 2026 World Cup.

Arsenal's Gentleman's Agreement

However, Arsenal appear well-positioned to retain Hincapie's services on a permanent basis. The Gunners possess a £45 million purchase option on the defender and, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, intend to exercise it this summer.

Romano revealed that a five-year contract is already in place between Hincapie and Arsenal, with the deal representing the club's first major signing of the summer window. The arrangement mirrors their previous acquisition of David Raya from Brentford, whereby a loan with a predetermined purchase clause served as a pathway to permanent registration.

Bayer Leverkusen will pocket a total package of €52 million from the transaction, whilst retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause. The formal announcement has been delayed until season's end due to Financial Fair Play considerations, though all documentation is effectively finalised.

Madrid's Contingency Plans

Nonetheless, Madrid's interest remains genuine. Journalists covering the club have reported that scouts have already convened with Hincapie's representatives, with recruitment chief Juni Calafat reportedly noting him on his priority list. Any potential swoop, however, depends on Madrid orchestrating suitable departures first—a familiar caveat in the club's summer business.

Mourinho's defensive overhaul continues as the former Manchester United and Tottenham manager shapes his squad to specifications, though Arsenal's apparent determination to make Hincapie's stay permanent may prove the decisive factor in this particular pursuit.
