Barcelona Face Rashford Deadline Crunch as Gordon Swoop Complicates Future

The clock is ticking at Barcelona. The Catalan club has until June 15 to trigger Marcus Rashford's €30m buy option, but their pursuit of Anthony Gordon has thrown a spanner in the works for the Manchester United forward's future at the Nou Camp.

Rashford's loan spell this season proved productive on paper—14 goals and 14 assists—yet Barcelona's hierarchy remains reluctant to stump up the required fee. Manager Hansi Flick has been pushing hard to make the deal permanent, but decision-makers at the club have grown uncertain, with The Athletic reporting that Gordon's imminent arrival makes Rashford's prospects of staying "more complicated."

Gordon's switch from Newcastle is effectively done. Barcelona have agreed a £70m package with the Magpies, with add-ons potentially pushing the total to £80m. The 23-year-old had initially appeared bound for Bayern Munich before Barcelona moved decisively. According to Fabrizio Romano, Gordon was set to land in Barcelona and undergo medical tests yesterday afternoon.

The problem is obvious: both Gordon and Rashford operate primarily on the left wing. While each has played centrally on occasion, Barcelona still intend to hunt for a striker to fill the Robert Lewandowski-shaped hole in their attack. That leaves precious little room for two left-wingers on the books.

Yet Rashford's representatives are maintaining hope. Sources close to the 27-year-old insist no decision has been relayed to them, and they continue to believe a path exists for him to remain alongside Gordon next season. Flick clearly backs that view, though other power brokers at the club harbour reservations.

Manchester United have made their position crystal clear: Barcelona must pay the €30m clause. There is no appetite at Old Trafford to reintegrate Rashford into Michael Carrick's plans, leaving INEOS scrambling for alternatives if the Barcelona talks collapse.

A swap arrangement has been floated. United are among the leading contenders to sign AC Milan's Rafael Leao, and Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Rossoneri are now willing to move on the Brazilian winger for just €50m (£43m)—a significant drop from their previous €100m (£86m) valuation.

Jaap Stam, speaking to ComeOn, reckons an exchange could be mutually beneficial. "Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work," the former United centre-back said. "Leao is also a good player. He has shown his potential at Milan. I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Man Utd. But you need to look not only at the skill of a player, but also at the mentality of players. You need to consider the situation where the club is, what player they are bringing in that is going to help the club going forward, so that you don't get any irritations from players who are not being picked to start."

Barcelona are scheduled to hold talks with Manchester United this week regarding Rashford's future. Ben Jacobs reported that the forward has already agreed personal terms and is awaiting a club-to-club resolution. United's stance remains unmoved: Barcelona must pay up or walk away.
