Guardiola Clueless on Maresca Speculation as City Boss Reaffirms Commitment

Pep Guardiola has drawn a blank when quizzed about whether Enzo Maresca has held discussions with Manchester City regarding their managerial vacancy, though the speculation appears premature given the Spaniard's continued presence in the dugout.

The plot thickened when Chelsea and Maresca parted ways on January 1, ending a tenure that had left the Blues sitting fifth in the Premier League. The Argentine had delivered silverware on two fronts—claiming the UEFA Conference League last season before adding the Club World Cup in the summer—yet boardroom friction ultimately proved decisive in his departure.

Prior to Maresca's exit from Stamford Bridge, reports had surfaced suggesting City viewed him as a potential successor should Guardiola vacate his post come summer. The 44-year-old holds prior connections to the Etihad, having served as Under-23s coach and first-team assistant under Guardiola himself.

When pressed on whether such conversations had materialised, Guardiola offered little insight. "No idea," he responded. "You have, I'm pretty sure, more info than me."

The City manager did lavish praise on Maresca, describing him as an "incredible, incredible manager" and "incredible person," before acknowledging that Chelsea's hierarchy had made their own call. Guardiola suggested the dismissal merely underscored how fortunate he considers himself at his current club. "My club is extraordinary," he stated.

Regarding his own future, Guardiola struck a contented note. With a contract running through 2027, he emphasised his happiness and desire to compete alongside his squad. He highlighted the board's unwavering backing during a difficult spell last season when City struggled to string victories together over a two-to-three month period.

"I have one more year's contract. I like to be here, so we will see, you will see," Guardiola concluded.

The timing of Maresca's departure presents a practical headache ahead of City's upcoming fixtures. Guardiola acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea's setup for their next meeting, noting that tactical preparation becomes complicated when the opposition's management remains in limbo.
