Aguero Backs Raphinha as 'Perfect' Fit for Manchester City's Attacking Arsenal

Sergio Aguero has thrown his weight behind a potential Manchester City move for Barcelona forward Raphinha, labelling the Brazilian as a natural fit for Pep Guardiola's system.

Speaking to Brazilian media outlet Trivela, the City legend was asked which South American talent would suit his former club. His verdict was unambiguous: Raphinha would be the answer.

"I have not been following Brazilian football closely enough to name someone from there. Among those already in Europe, I really like Raphinha. He is a player who would fit perfectly into City's style of play," Aguero explained.

The 29-year-old would undoubtedly arrive as one of City's premier attacking options, having flourished under Hansi Flick's management at the Catalan club. Since Flick took charge ahead of the 2023/24 season, Raphinha has amassed 47 goals and 31 assists for Barcelona.

His pedigree in England is well-established. During two seasons at Leeds United in the Premier League, he notched 17 goals and 12 assists, proving instrumental in the club's survival efforts before his departure coincided with their relegation.

Yet despite Barcelona's ongoing financial predicament—which could theoretically make them open to selling an elite performer for substantial funds—a genuine transfer remains highly improbable. City have been consistently targeting younger prospects such as Savinho, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki as Guardiola orchestrates a squad rebuild around emerging talent rather than ageing stars.

Arsenal and Chelsea have previously been mooted as potential suitors, though both appear more inclined to pursue younger options should Raphinha become available.

Barcelona's summer priorities appear centred elsewhere. With Robert Lewandowski, 38, approaching the end of his contract, the La Liga outfit will prioritise recruiting a fresh focal point for their attack. Former City striker Julian Alvarez, now at Atletico Madrid, has reportedly caught their eye, though Spanish media suggests Omar Marmoush—currently at City—could emerge as an alternative target if Alvarez proves prohibitively expensive.

Whether such manoeuvring could facilitate a swap arrangement involving Raphinha remains purely speculative; the prospect of City committing substantial resources to a player approaching 30 appears remote.

On a separate matter, Aguero has also sought to quell speculation surrounding Guardiola's future. With the manager holding one additional year remaining on his contract, the former striker urged City supporters to resist unnecessary anxiety.

"It is a debate that does not help anyone and only creates unnecessary noise around something that should not even be on the table right now. When the time comes, it will be resolved. It is not something to worry about," Aguero stated.
