Nuno in Mea Culpa Mode After Wolves Humbling

Nuno Espirito Santo faced the press with contrition written across his face after West Ham's trip to Molineux ended in a thorough 3-0 battering at the hands of Wolves, a club that had failed to register a single victory all campaign until Saturday.

The scale of the capitulation proved all the more galling given that Nottingham Forest's earlier loss to Aston Villa had handed the Hammers a genuine opportunity to climb the table. Instead, they trudged back down the M5 empty-handed and deflated.

The West Ham boss made no attempt to hide his dismay at what unfolded, particularly during a first half that he deemed "embarrassing" and "poor." Speaking to the BBC, Nuno struggled to articulate precisely where it all went wrong, instead opting for soul-searching.

"Nobody expected us to play so bad," he reflected. "A real poor performance today. I wish I could answer properly why. Now is the moment for us to reflect and think are we doing everything we can? Do we realise the situation we are in? And how to get out of this situation and improve. There are things that need to be addressed."

With the travelling contingent having made the journey to the Midlands, Nuno felt compelled to offer an apology. "The first half was embarrassing. I apologise to our fans who travelled. This is not what we want to show them," he said.

Since taking the hot seat in September, Nuno's tenure has failed to spark any meaningful improvement, and performances like this only deepen the questions surrounding his appointment. The manager did point towards squad limitations as a contributing factor, acknowledging that transfer business in January could provide some relief.

"It is a complex situation. The club is working on that situation," he explained. "We have problems in terms of squad and options but that is not a justification for what we did in the first half – the mistakes we made, the lack of effort… it was very bad. It was about mistakes we made over and over again that was really poor."

With a challenging fixture against Nottingham Forest looming, Nuno insisted the focus must now shift towards a reaction. "Nottingham Forest will be a tough game but now is about reacting and transforming and improving," he concluded.

On the opposite touchline, Rob Edwards presided over a performance that vindicated Wolves' recent trajectory. With four points harvested across the week, the hosts demonstrated the kind of progression Edwards has been seeking, even as survival remains a distant dream at this stage of the season.

"We have been improving and progressing and you saw that today," Edwards told the assembled media. "It is another step in the right direction, that is all it was and it is nice it has culminated in a win. It was a complete performance. I feel we are progressing and building in the right way."

The Wolves boss reserved particular praise for his squad's commitment throughout the week. "The lads have been all in. Big credit to them and huge credit for the supporters, that was for them today," he said.

Even Edwards, typically cautious in his demeanour, allowed himself a moment of relief as the final whistle approached. "Football is always stressful and with 30 seconds to go I started allowing myself the chance to enjoy it," he added with a wry smile.
