Luis Enrique Emerges as Serious Contender for Manchester United's Permanent Manager Role

Manchester United have begun seriously examining the possibility of recruiting Paris Saint-Germain's Luis Enrique as their next permanent manager, according to reporting from The Independent's chief football writer Miguel Delaney.

The Red Devils turned to Michael Carrick on a temporary basis following Ruben Amorim's sacking on January 5. The interim boss has reinvigorated Old Trafford with notable victories against Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa, earning significant credit with the support.

United currently occupy third place in the Premier League standings, holding a six-point cushion above Liverpool in fifth. This strong position strengthens their prospects of securing Champions League football next season—a significant factor in attracting elite managerial talent and marquee players alike.

While Carrick has established himself as the leading candidate for the permanent role, United's decision-makers intend to explore other options to ensure they make the optimal choice. Delaney's latest column indicates that Enrique's stock is rising within the club's thinking.

"Manchester United insiders say that Luis Enrique is the name increasingly being mentioned, with the club reportedly willing to make a serious push to secure him," Delaney wrote. "You might wonder why he would leave PSG now, but there is growing speculation that he will depart in the summer, and he has long expressed a desire to work in the Premier League."

The Manchester Evening News' senior United correspondent Tyrone Marshall has similarly discussed the possibility. "Enrique speaks excellent English and wants to work in the Premier League one day," Marshall noted. "But he also wants that to be with the right project, and whether United can convince him taking over at Old Trafford ticks that box is another question. For now, Carrick remains favourite and I think that is about right, but there is plenty of time left this season and I wouldn't rule Enrique out just yet."

Other potential targets remain under consideration at Old Trafford. Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Andoni Iraola are all on the club's radar. De Zerbi is currently available, whilst Nagelsmann could potentially leave his position as Germany head coach this summer despite his contract extending beyond Euro 2028. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola has recently dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Athletic Club, offering United encouragement.

INEOS previously held interest in Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti, though Tuchel has renewed his England contract with the FA, and Ancelotti appears set to commit his future to Brazil.

Presently, Carrick looks the most probable destination for a long-term deal, though United will certainly approach Enrique if the PSG boss becomes genuinely interested in a fresh opportunity away from Paris.
