United's Search for Amorim's Successor: Premier League Experience Becomes Non-Negotiable

Manchester United are determined not to repeat the Ruben Amorim experiment by installing a manager with proven Premier League credentials when they finally settle on a permanent replacement.

Amorim's sacking on Monday followed a spectacular breakdown in relations with the club's hierarchy, particularly director of football Jason Wilcox. The Portuguese boss's departure came hot on the heels of an inflammatory post-match press conference after the Leeds defeat, where he made clear his expectation to function as United's manager rather than merely a head coach.

The Portuguese tactician had grown increasingly frustrated over what he viewed as unfulfilled commitments regarding January transfer window backing, whilst United's leadership had similarly tired of his refusal to abandon his favoured 3-4-3 formation.

Darren Fletcher, the former United midfielder, has stepped into the breach temporarily whilst the club evaluates both short-term and long-term managerial options.

According to reports, United are keen to sidestep the pitfalls that accompanied the Amorim appointment by pursuing a boss with established Premier League pedigree this time around.

Several candidates are under consideration, with Oliver Glasner emerging as a particularly attractive prospect. The Crystal Palace manager is set to become a free agent come summer after turning down the club's contract renewal. Glasner has caught the eye of elite Premier League outfits, notably after delivering Palace their maiden major trophy—the FA Cup—in May.

Thomas Tuchel, currently overseeing England's fortunes, also features prominently in discussions, having previously held talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other INEOS representatives during summer 2024 before United chose to persist with Erik ten Hag.

Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth is similarly in the frame, though perhaps the most intriguing name to surface is Mauricio Pochettino. The USA manager's appointment raised eyebrows among some observers, viewed by certain quarters as a lateral move for the 53-year-old Argentine. Pochettino has harboured links with Old Trafford for years, tracing back to a well-documented lunch with Sir Alex Ferguson in 2016. His Tottenham tenure proved exemplary—shepherding Spurs to a Champions League final and a Premier League runners-up finish—though his solitary Chelsea campaign between 2023 and 2024 proved rather turbulent.

Other names circulating include Michael Carrick, Enzo Maresca, and Sir Gareth Southgate.

Maresca's potential candidacy has provoked considerable scepticism, with former United defender Nicky Butt declaring he would surrender his season tickets should the Red Devils pursue the ex-Chelsea tactician. Besides, Maresca is reportedly eyeing the Manchester City hotseat should Pep Guardiola depart, making any Old Trafford switch decidedly unlikely.

Rio Ferdinand has meanwhile identified which United player stands to gain most from Fletcher's temporary stewardship.
