Alonso Emerges as Leading Target as Chelsea Intensify Managerial Hunt

Chelsea have opened dialogue with Xabi Alonso as they accelerate their search for a permanent manager to replace Liam Rosenior, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The Spanish tactician, currently without a club following his departure from Real Madrid in January 2026, has indicated he would be receptive to a Premier League opportunity this summer.

Calum McFarlane continues in an interim capacity at Stamford Bridge, a position he assumed in April 2026 after Rosenior's sacking. Rosenior himself had only arrived in January, replacing Enzo Maresca who departed for pastures new.

BlueCo's hierarchy are keen to have a successor in place before the World Cup commences. Alonso, who guided Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga glory in 2023/24 before his brief spell at the Bernabéu, now sits atop their wish list following initial contact.

The Liverpool and Real Madrid veteran remains on Chelsea's radar despite persistent rumours linking him with the Liverpool hotseat as a potential successor to Arne Slot. However, he is far from their only option. Fulham's Marco Silva and departing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola continue to feature prominently in discussions, whilst Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and former Flamengo boss Filipe Luis have emerged as fresh contenders.

Luis's name had previously circulated around Stamford Bridge prior to Rosenior's appointment, with conversations at one stage turning to a potential move to Strasbourg before Gary O'Neil's appointment there.

Como manager and ex-Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has also attracted admirers, though sources suggest he remains settled in Italy and shows little appetite for an immediate departure. Similarly, FC Porto's Francesco Farioli is expected to remain in Portugal despite interest from west London.
