Tonali Circles Real Madrid as Summer Scramble Looms for Newcastle Midfielder

Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali is casting his net wide in search of a summer escape, with Real Madrid now joining the queue of suitors after his representatives tested the waters at the Bernabeu.

The Italian midfielder's agent Giuseppe Rizzo has been making moves behind the scenes, contacting Madrid through intermediaries to gauge whether a deal might be feasible when the transfer window reopens. It's a familiar dance for a player of Tonali's calibre—one that comes after the chaos of deadline day failed to dislodge him from St James' Park.

Recall, if you will, the frenzied speculation that engulfed Tonali just weeks ago when Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg claimed Arsenal had launched a last-minute swoop. Ben Jacobs quickly poured cold water on that tale, with David Ornstein subsequently clarifying that the Gunners had received nothing more than an offer from the player's representatives—no formal approach was ever made. By early afternoon on deadline day, the rumour had evaporated entirely.

That didn't, however, erase Arsenal's underlying interest. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the north London club remain keen, and they're far from alone. Juventus and several other top-flight outfits are monitoring developments closely, with Romano suggesting the real negotiations won't properly commence until February through April as Newcastle chart their course for the remainder of the season.

As for Real Madrid, the picture appears murkier. Spanish outlet Defensa Central reports that whilst Tonali's camp has made contact, Madrid's hierarchy consider his €90m valuation steep. The club did track him previously, but sources suggest he doesn't tick all their boxes at present. With midfield and defensive reinforcements high on their agenda for summer, the Bernabeu outfit are hunting profiles that better suit their ambitions.

Romano has flagged that Real Madrid will indeed be active in both departments come the off-season, describing it as "a huge summer" for the Spanish champions as they look to strengthen their ranks.
