Newcastle Edge Ahead in Brahim Diaz Race as Howe Snubs Zouma Move

Newcastle United have positioned themselves as frontrunners to land Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz, with reports suggesting they're prepared to meet the La Liga side's €60 million valuation.

The Magpies have endured a frustrating transfer campaign to date. Last summer's window was consumed by the protracted Alexander Isak transfer saga, which ultimately saw the Swedish striker depart for Liverpool. Though Newcastle reinvested those funds, their recruitment proved hit-and-miss, with Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade emerging as their sole standout acquisitions.

That patchy business has manifested itself on the pitch. Howe's outfit currently languish ninth in the Premier League after 23 games, their season marred by inconsistency. A fresh injection of quality in January could prove the tonic they need.

Enter Diaz. The 25-year-old has struggled for consistent minutes at the Bernabéu this term, yet impressed significantly for Morocco at the African Cup of Nations, netting five goals across seven matches. His tournament ended in heartbreak when he missed a Panenka penalty in the 1-0 final defeat to Senegal.

Real Madrid have now signalled their willingness to move the player on, and Newcastle are moving decisively. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports the Magpies have "taken the lead" in the race, with an offer in the region of €60 million being readied. The club believes Diaz's versatility, ability to operate between the lines, and finishing prowess would slot seamlessly into their system. Newcastle are keen to wrap matters up swiftly before rival suitors emerge in the closing stages of the window.

On the defensive front, however, Howe has drawn a line in the sand. Newcastle have declined the opportunity to pursue Kurt Zouma, the 31-year-old centre-back who recently left Romanian outfit CFR Cluj following a brief four-game stint.

The former Chelsea and West Ham defender is currently available on a free transfer after quitting Cluj this month. Yet the Magpies have rebuffed the chance to bring him to St James' Park, with no interest registered in his services.
