Arsenal Make Shock Tonali Bid as Merino Injury Forces Deadline Day Scramble

The transfer window took an unexpected twist on deadline day when Arsenal moved to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, prompted by a significant blow to their midfield options.

Merino's absence from the Gunners' squad has become unavoidable after sustaining a foot injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the campaign. Arsenal confirmed the setback in a statement: "Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season. Everyone is fully focused on supporting Mikel to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."

Facing a depleted midfield, Arsenal have now turned their attention to Tonali, the Italian international who has established himself as one of the Premier League's standout operators in that position. German journalist Florian Plettenberg broke the story on social media, posting: "Arsenal are exploring a surprising Deadline Day move for Sandro Tonali. Very difficult at this stage, as Newcastle have rejected an initial approach."

One transfer insider with a substantial social media following subsequently claimed that Tonali's representative is actively pushing for a switch to the Emirates. However, that narrative has been quickly dismantled by those with closer ties to St James' Park. Lee Ryder from The Chronicle has poured cold water on proceedings, stating: "It's understood that Newcastle have instantly dismissed any suggestions of Arsenal and Sandro Tonali. No contact whatsoever I'm told."

The scramble for reinforcements has drawn scrutiny over Arsenal's earlier decision to let academy prospect Ethan Nwaneri depart on loan to Marseille. Arsenal expert Charles Watts has questioned the wisdom of that move, particularly given the current midfield crisis: "There's a good young midfield player at Marseille apparently. Something like this was always my fear about letting Nwaneri leave. Undoubtedly good for his development, but given what's at stake this season, my purely selfish preference was to keep the squad as strong as possible until the summer."

Watts acknowledged the different profiles of Nwaneri and Merino but noted that Kai Havertz can cover some of the Spanish midfielder's responsibilities if required. "Nwaneri would have provided another very valuable rotation option. But what's done is done – and playing week in, week out is clearly better for Nwaneri. No doubt about that. Midfielder depth could prove useful now at times if needed," he added.

A loan deal remains Arsenal's most realistic avenue of recruitment at this stage, with their ambitious pursuit of Tonali appearing to have hit an immediate brick wall.
