Bruno's Challenge Leaves PSV Fuming as Newcastle Eye PSG Revenge

Newcastle have virtually wrapped up their passage to the last 16 after dismantling PSV Eindhoven 3-0 on Wednesday, and a positive result against Paris Saint-Germain next week should seal an automatic spot in the knockout rounds.

Eddie Howe is eyeing the trip to the Parc des Princes with something approaching unfinished business. Two seasons back, the Magpies were seconds away from pulling off a stunning away win before Kylian Mbappe's 98th-minute leveller broke hearts. That came after Newcastle had demolished PSG 4-1 at St James' Park earlier in the competition.

"It will be great for our development, but we want to try to go there and win, of course," Howe explained when discussing the upcoming fixture. "No, it's not revenge for us. It was a painful end, but it was a backs-to-the-wall, heroic performance, really. I remember Nick Pope making a number of unbelievable saves that night to keep us in front."

The Newcastle faithful won't have let that memory fade, and their players rarely need much prompting to bring intensity to European nights. That aggression proved costly for Bruno Guimaraes on Wednesday, though not quite in the way one might expect.

The Newcastle skipper picked up only a yellow card for his studs-up challenge on PSV's Joey Veerman, yet came out the worse for wear himself. He departed the field to roaring chants of "Bruno, Bruno" just before half-time, prompting genuine concern from his manager.

"Yeah, a little bit sore. It's an ankle problem," Howe said post-match. "A little bit of swelling in his ankle. Having just seen him, we hope it's not serious. Difficult to know. I think Bruno is the type of player that never wants to come off. He always wants to play, so the fact he has come off is a worry for us. We'll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible."

Newcastle had built a commanding 2-0 advantage by the interval through goals from Yoane Wissa and Anthony Gordon, with Harvey Barnes adding gloss to the scoreline midway through the second half.

Veerman, meanwhile, remains convinced he got off lightly. Speaking to De Telegraaf, the PSV midfielder didn't mince words about the challenge. "It hurts. It'll probably last a while. It's truly outrageous. He touched the ball first, he said. That's why it wasn't a red card. If this isn't a red card, it's over," he fumed.

"He puts his foot full force over the ball and comes full force with his studs under my shin guard and on top of my ankle. If you're unlucky, you'll break your leg. I think I was lucky."
