Newcastle Edge Ahead in Race for Free Agent Senesi as United Pull Back

The Newcastle takeover project appears to have claimed another scalp in the transfer market, with the Magpies now positioned as the leading contenders to land Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi this summer—a move that has simultaneously seen Manchester United retreat from the pursuit.

Senesi's contract at the Vitality Stadium expires at season's end, leaving the Argentine defender set to depart as a free agent. United had previously been mooted as potential suitors, but fresh reporting suggests Erik ten Hag's side have shelved any plans to move for the 28-year-old, confident that their existing defensive options will suffice for next season.

With Harry Maguire expected to remain at Old Trafford, the club see no pressing need to bolster their centre-back ranks. United's current roster includes Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven and Tyler Fredricson alongside Maguire, leaving little room for recruitment in that department.

Newcastle's emergence as frontrunners comes amid competition from several quarters. Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa have all registered interest, while Barcelona are circling with a view to securing a bargain deal. Juventus, too, have been tracking the former Feyenoord man.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has made little secret of his desire to retain Senesi, praising the defender's quality both in possession and without the ball. Speaking in December, Iraola highlighted Senesi's composure on the ball and his ability to instil confidence in teammates, whilst noting his experience across multiple leagues and European competition—assets the Bournemouth boss considers invaluable to his project.

Yet despite his manager's public backing, Senesi appears keen to pursue fresh challenges elsewhere, setting the stage for what could be a significant summer move for one of the Premier League's standout performers.
