Neville Demands Sesko Starts at Palace or Risk Crushing the Striker's Confidence

Gary Neville has left Michael Carrick in no uncertain terms: Benjamin Sesko must get the nod in Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace, or the interim United boss risks doing serious damage to the forward's morale.

United have been humming under Carrick's watch, stringing together five wins in their last six Premier League outings and breathing fresh life into their top-four ambitions. The contrast with Ruben Amorim's tenure has been stark, particularly when it comes to getting the best from the club's summer signings.

Sesko epitomises that turnaround. Written off as a disappointment earlier in the campaign, the striker has become a different proposition in recent weeks, netting in three consecutive substitute appearances before clinching Monday night's 1-0 victory over Everton with a composed finish on the counter-attack.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former United skipper read plenty into that celebration. "His celebration was a message to everybody," Neville explained. "It was saying 'get me in this damn team now. This is my start next time'. He'd have been gutted not to start after scoring a brilliant goal against West Ham."

For Neville, the decision is straightforward. "On Sunday against Crystal Palace, he starts. I think it would kill the lad if he didn't start on Sunday," he declared.

The pundit acknowledged his previous scepticism about Sesko's form but insisted the evidence demands a rethink. "You have to move with what you see. United have struggled in the last couple of games against West Ham and Everton. He looks like he's growing in his game and his body, and his confidence is high."

Neville went further, outlining how he expects Carrick to set up the team: Matheus Cunha on the left, Bryan Mbeumo on the right, Sesko leading the line, and Bruno Fernandes operating behind. That arrangement would see Amad Diallo drop to the bench despite his solid contributions this season.

"Amad has been really good but Sesko has to start," Neville insisted. "He's been scoring winners and equalisers—you have to put him in."

Carrick himself has backed Sesko's trajectory since taking charge. After the Everton win, the interim manager offered his assessment: "He is growing as a player. Sometimes it's big steps, sometimes it's little steps. He has taken some huge ones recently. The confidence and belief he is playing with is great to see."
