Van der Vaart Issues Apology After Offensive Remarks About Japan Players During Netherlands Commentary

Rafael van der Vaart has found himself at the centre of controversy following his analysis of the Netherlands' Group F match against Japan, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The former Tottenham midfielder, known for his forthright opinions, was providing expert commentary when he made remarks that have since drawn widespread criticism. While discussing Japan's late equaliser from Daichi Kamada, Van der Vaart attempted what he framed as a joke about the appearance of the Japanese players.

"The perfect corner is really very difficult to defend," he began his analysis of the goal. "This one came with the right speed, just over the five-yard line. With a bit of luck it would have gone in, but the corner was amazing."

He then added: "They [the Japanese players] do look alike, of course, maybe he [Van de Ven] thought that… That's a joke, of course. I hardly dare say anything."

The 43-year-old's comments sparked immediate backlash, and Van der Vaart has subsequently issued a formal apology through his management. "My intention was never to insult, hurt, or discriminate against anyone," he stated. "I understand that some people found my words hurtful. I sincerely regret that."

The former Dutch international continued: "If I have upset people because of this, I offer my apologies. That was never my intention. I take the reactions that have arisen seriously and understand that words can be interpreted differently. Therefore, I think it is important to make it clear that there was no racist or discriminatory intent behind my statement. I hope this explanation provides more clarity about my intentions and the context in which the remark was made."

Beyond the controversy, Van der Vaart also levelled criticism at the Netherlands' tactical approach during the match, suggesting the team sat too deep. He was particularly critical of captain Virgil van Dijk's mobility issues, making an unflattering comparison during the half-time analysis.

"I have to be honest: I was quite shocked by Van Dijk," Van der Vaart remarked. "With him, I thought: that doesn't look good. Especially while turning. It is proving very difficult. A bit like a Boeing 747 turning. I hope he starts turning a bit faster during the tournament."
