Chelsea Ready to Test Aston Villa with £100m Rogers Bid, but Waddle Warns Star Should Stay Put

Chelsea are gearing up to make a serious play for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers this summer, with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy ready to table an ambitious bid for the 23-year-old playmaker.

The Blues' co-director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields, has long admired Rogers and is spearheading the club's efforts to bring him to west London. Chelsea are set to formalise their interest with a concrete summer proposal, though the Midlands outfit are unlikely to entertain anything short of £100 million – a figure that would eclipse Villa's previous club-record sale, Jack Grealish's 2021 move to Manchester City.

Rogers' stellar campaign has not escaped the attention of rival suitors either. Both Arsenal and Liverpool are keeping tabs on the midfielder, though their pursuit remains less advanced than Chelsea's at present.

It's hardly surprising given what the Villa man has delivered this term. Eight goals and five assists across 31 Premier League outings have played no small part in keeping Unai Emery's side perched in fourth place. The England international has also nailed down a regular starting berth under Thomas Tuchel and appears destined for a prominent role at the World Cup, provided injury doesn't intervene.

Yet one influential voice is urging Rogers to resist any temptation to swap the Midlands for the capital. Chris Waddle, the former England star, has made his position abundantly clear: the Villa midfielder should remain exactly where he is.

"I'm a big fan of Rogers," Waddle told FootballTransfers. "His work rate is good as well and he's always available. He's played so much football. Every time you see Villa, he's playing. They rest Ollie Watkins, they rest Jadon Sancho, they rest John McGinn, but he just seems to play every game."

Waddle harbours concerns about the toll such relentless football might exact before the World Cup arrives, but his primary argument centres on Rogers' prospects at Villa itself. With a fresh long-term contract in his back pocket, the playmaker is well-positioned to challenge for honours at his current club without the need to uproot.

"He's got a good manager, a great team, he's playing well and he should be the player behind Harry Kane for me," Waddle continued. "Villa are still going the right way, they're still pushing for the Champions League, they've got a chance of winning trophies. I don't see any reason why he needs to leave. He's very happy and content at Villa."

The former winger acknowledged that financial pressures can sometimes force clubs into selling their prized assets, but sees no such necessity at Villa Park at this juncture. For Rogers, the message is straightforward: stick with the project already underway rather than chase the Chelsea dream.
