Carrick's Middlesbrough Reunion Plan at United: Hackney Warned to Pick Right Destination

Manchester United are actively strengthening their midfield ranks this summer, with Atalanta's Ederson appearing close to completion. Yet the Red Devils are casting their net wider, with several other targets under consideration.

Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have cropped up in the conversation, though one particular reunion is taking shape: boss Michael Carrick's push to bring Middlesbrough's Hackney to Old Trafford. The England midfielder has also attracted interest from Tottenham and Everton, but Carrick's enthusiasm appears to be driving United's pursuit.

Before Hackney makes his next move, however, he's been advised to think carefully. Former striker Brian Deane has urged the 23-year-old to weigh his options properly, fearing a misjudged switch could stall his progression.

"It's a difficult one because he's still a young man," Deane explained. "I feel that for his trajectory, perhaps being tested at the next level would be good for him personally, but he has to be careful which club he goes to for his development. If he goes to the wrong club, then he might not get the game time that he needs to make that next step. So wherever he goes, if he does go, then it's got to be a thought-out decision."

Thrived Under Carrick's Watch

Hackney's pedigree under Carrick at Boro speaks volumes. The midfielder has been a cornerstone of the manager's plans, appearing in 104 games across three seasons. He's chipped in with nine goals and nine assists during that spell, proving integral to Carrick's tactical setup.

The leap to United, however, remains uncharted territory. At 23, Hackney has never played above Championship level, presenting an obvious step up. Last season was his strongest yet—six goals and eight assists across all competitions—suggesting he's on an upward curve.

Yet Deane's caution carries weight. United's midfield currently boasts four senior operators, two of whom will likely be tied up at the World Cup. With one or possibly two fresh additions expected in that department, minutes could prove scarce. Should Hackney find himself warming the bench rather than getting regular football, his development could stall rather than flourish.
