Van de Ven's Mind Made Up: Elite Clubs Circling as Spurs Star Eyes Exit

The transfer rumour mill is in overdrive at Spurs, and this one carries real weight: Micky van de Ven has apparently made up his mind that his future lies elsewhere.

The 23-year-old Dutch centre-back, who arrived from Wolfsburg in 2023 to become one of the Premier League's standout defenders despite this season's dip in form, has reportedly communicated internally that north London no longer holds his ambitions. Even with Tottenham potentially staring down the barrel of their first drop to the second tier in nearly half a century, Van de Ven appears unmoved by sentiment—he wants out.

Contract negotiations launched at the start of 2025 have gone nowhere, with the player's resolve only hardening. According to reports, frustration festered during Ange Postecoglou's time in charge, and matters have scarcely improved under subsequent regimes. Even new boss Roberto De Zerbi's arrival hasn't shifted Van de Ven's thinking, despite the defender being impressed by what he's witnessed so far.

His representatives have now formally notified Tottenham of his desire to depart this summer. Despite still being locked into a deal running through 2029—which theoretically gives Spurs considerable leverage as a sellable asset—Van de Ven's stance appears immovable.

The vultures are circling. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United have all registered their interest, but the defender himself is said to favour a move to Anfield above all other Premier League options. Real Madrid are keeping tabs as well, keen to explore left-footed defensive reinforcements after previously eyeing Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck.

Complicating matters further, Van de Ven's defensive partner Cristian Romero is also expected to depart, with Atletico Madrid maintaining their pursuit. Spurs do possess a verbal agreement with Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi to arrive on a free transfer should they survive the drop, whilst Croatian prospect Luka Vuskovic represents another option for the backline.

The upshot? Tottenham are increasingly open to the possibility of both Van de Ven and Romero departing as part of a wholesale defensive overhaul.
