Mbappe Calls for Prestianni Ban After Vinicius Jr Racism Row

The Champions League erupted into controversy during Benfica's first-leg clash with Real Madrid, with a racism allegation threatening to overshadow what should have been a compelling European night.

The flashpoint came after Vinicius Jr opened the scoring for the visitors. Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni, the Argentinian defender, allegedly directed racist abuse at the Brazilian winger whilst covering his mouth with his shirt. Vinicius Jr immediately alerted the referee, triggering UEFA's racism protocol, though the incident ultimately boiled down to one player's word against another's. After a considerable stoppage, the match resumed with Madrid's 1-0 advantage intact.

The fallout has been swift and fierce. Mbappe delivered a withering assessment of Prestianni's conduct, insisting the 25-year-old has no place in European football's premier competition. The Paris-born striker claimed he witnessed Prestianni repeat a racial slur five times and described the behaviour as beneath the standards required of professional footballers.

"What I saw is very clear: number 25 said five times to Vini that you are a monkey," Mbappe stated. "Everyone can have their opinion, but this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. It's wonderful to play in the Champions League, but showing this image is terrible for world football."

Prestianni has since taken to Instagram to deny the allegations, claiming Vinicius Jr misheard what was said and asserting he has never directed racist comments at anyone. He also referenced receiving threats from Real Madrid players.

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho offered a different perspective, suggesting Vinicius Jr's celebratory gesture may have provoked the confrontation. Mourinho stressed the Portuguese club's anti-racist credentials, pointing to Eusebio's legendary status within the organisation.

Vinicius Jr responded with his own social media statement, branding Prestianni a coward and highlighting the weakness of those who resort to such tactics. He expressed frustration at receiving a yellow card for his goal celebration whilst questioning the effectiveness of UEFA's racism protocol. The Brazilian also noted this was far from his first experience with such incidents.

Madrid hold a slender lead heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week, though the sporting narrative has been thoroughly muddied by events in Portugal.
