West Ham Deny Manchester United Contact Over Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United's summer rebuild continues to gather pace, but West Ham have poured cold water on one particular transfer rumour doing the rounds.

The Red Devils have already secured Ederson Silva from Atalanta and are hunting additional midfield reinforcements. With Casemiro departing and INEOS supremo Sir Jim Ratcliffe ready to move on Manuel Ugarte, manager Michael Carrick is keen to bolster his engine room.

Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a target for United's scouts. The Portuguese midfielder, who admires fellow countryman Bruno Fernandes, is said to have attracted interest from Old Trafford, with United's representatives understood to have made contact with his representatives. The 21-year-old is reportedly keen on the prospect of a switch.

Yet the Hammers have flatly rejected suggestions that any approach has been made. According to reports, West Ham insist they've heard nothing from United or any other suitors regarding their midfielder—a curious denial given Fernandes' profile and the circumstances surrounding his club.

The east London outfit face an uncomfortable reality: next season will be spent in the Championship following their Premier League relegation. Fernandes, despite impressing this term, will almost certainly seek pastures new rather than drop down a division. West Ham have slapped an £80 million price tag on their academy product, formerly of Sporting Lisbon, though the club needs to shift more than £100 million in sales to balance the books.

United, meanwhile, are well-stocked financially for their summer spending spree. The situation could be sweetened further should Mason Greenwood complete his exit from Marseille. Fenerbahce presidential hopeful Hakan Safi has claimed a four-year agreement is in place with the former United forward, describing him as a proven performer at the continent's elite level.

That move carries particular significance for United due to a substantial sell-on clause inserted when Greenwood departed for France in 2024. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated the percentage significantly exceeds the typical 5-10 range, meaning a meaningful financial windfall awaits Old Trafford should the transfer materialise.
