Dugarry Slams Greenwood as Shameful Marseille Display Sparks Fury

Mason Greenwood's tumultuous spell at Marseille has taken another damaging turn, with ex-Red Christophe Dugarry delivering a withering critique of the forward's recent showing and calling for him to leave the Ligue Un club.

Greenwood's journey from Manchester United academy prospect to French football has been nothing short of turbulent. The 24-year-old faced charges relating to attempted rape and assault in late 2022 and early 2023, though the case was ultimately discontinued following the withdrawal of key witnesses. United subsequently moved to offload him, first on loan to Getafe in summer 2023—where he contributed eight goals and six assists across 33 matches—before his permanent move to Marseille ahead of the 2024/25 season for approximately £26m.

That deal included a 50% sell-on clause for the Old Trafford club, a detail that could prove particularly lucrative given recent developments. Over two seasons in France, Greenwood has registered 47 goals and 16 assists in 79 appearances, yet his application has increasingly come under scrutiny as Marseille's campaign has faltered.

Reports last month suggested internal friction with manager Habib Beye had seen Greenwood sidelined, with United potentially positioned to receive around £26m through a "lucrative offer" from Atletico Madrid. That prospect took on fresh urgency following his anonymous display in a 3-0 defeat to Nantes, a performance that prompted Dugarry to unleash a scathing assessment of the forward's conduct and commitment.

"You're a miserable wretch, get out of here," Dugarry declared, mincing few words in his evaluation. The former Marseille player described Greenwood as an "absolute disgrace" whose showing against Nantes was nothing short of "shameful."

Dugarry's ire extended to what he characterised as Greenwood's ingratitude given the opportunity afforded to him. "This kid was sidelined from the team, he made a serious mistake before Marseille signed him, and the club took a risk by bringing him on board," he explained. "He might never have played football again. Everyone did everything possible to put him in the best conditions… and he mocks everyone, he's a wretch."

The former striker emphasised Greenwood's supposed leadership responsibilities, suggesting the forward's indifference represented a betrayal of those who had invested faith in him. "You're the leader of this team, everyone depends on you," Dugarry continued. "When you're not there, everyone misses you. And what do you offer in return, what do you offer after all the sacrifices—is this it?"

Dugarry concluded his assessment by suggesting financial considerations would be the sole silver lining for Marseille. "There's the money you're going to make the club earn, but nobody's going to shed a tear for you," he said. "What he did against Nantes is shameful. He doesn't care about anything, he has no defence, and he should be condemned, burnt at the stake. It's an absolute disgrace, he's a miserable wretch."

For United, the prospect of monetising their investment through a transfer fee—courtesy of that sell-on clause—may yet provide compensation for a saga that has cast a long shadow over their recent history.
