Greenwood Seals Fenerbahce Switch as United Eye Windfall from Sell-On Clause

Mason Greenwood's next chapter appears to have been written, with the forward having reached an agreement to join Fenerbahce on a four-year contract this summer.

The announcement comes from Hakan Safi, the Turkish club's presidential candidate, who declared the deal done and dusted. "We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood," Safi announced. "He has proven himself at the highest level of European football and has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise."

The move represents another chapter in an extraordinary journey for the England international. Greenwood came through Manchester United's academy ranks and was earmarked as a cornerstone of the club's future, but his career was derailed after he faced charges relating to attempted rape and assault in 2022. The club suspended him immediately, though the Crown Prosecution Service subsequently discontinued proceedings in early 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses.

After his suspension, Greenwood moved to Spanish outfit Getafe on loan during summer 2023, before securing a permanent switch to French side Marseille a year later. United sold him for approximately £26 million but shrewdly negotiated a sell-on clause well above the standard market rate.

That clause now looms large in United's summer planning. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has highlighted the financial implications for the Old Trafford club, emphasising that the sell-on arrangement represents considerably more than the typical 5-10% of most transfer deals. "Manchester United have been always interested in this story because they have a heavy sell-on clause included in the deal with Marseille," Romano explained. "It is not 5%, 7%, 10% – it is more than this. Man Utd are really interested because this could be extra money into Manchester United pockets this summer if Mason Greenwood leaves Olympique Marseille for consistent money, with Fenerbahce reaching an agreement with the player."

Greenwood's performances in France have improved markedly over his two seasons there, though reports have suggested tensions behind the scenes at the Stade Vélodrome. His exit now appears imminent, though the precise financial details and Marseille's acceptance of the Fenerbahce offer remain to be formally confirmed.
