Greenwood Gives Roma the Nod as United's Sell-On Windfall Beckons

Mason Greenwood has given the green light to a transfer to Serie A outfit AS Roma, bringing an end to his spell at Marseille and triggering some welcome news for Manchester United's coffers.

The forward's journey from Old Trafford academy prospect to continental wanderer has been anything but straightforward. United suspended him in early 2022 as he faced charges of attempted rape and assault. When the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case a year later following the withdrawal of key witnesses, the path to his rehabilitation appeared clear – except it wasn't. The reputational damage meant United had no realistic option but to move him on.

Greenwood subsequently impressed during a loan stint at Getafe in La Liga before Marseille secured his permanent services for approximately £26m ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. Crucially for United, that deal came wrapped with a 50% sell-on clause – a detail that's about to become rather relevant.

Over two seasons in France, Greenwood has accumulated 48 goals across 81 appearances, though whispers of internal friction have circulated. A summer exit always looked probable, with Fenerbahce's presidential candidates even claiming agreement had been reached. Roma, however, have now hijacked proceedings.

According to reports, Greenwood has formally approved the Roma switch and has already bade farewell to his Marseille teammates. Salary negotiations are progressing positively, with both sides keen to wrap matters up swiftly. Marseille are holding out for €55 million including add-ons, though Roma's opening gambit sits around €40 million. The latter figure won't seal the deal, but it signals genuine intent from the Giallorossi.

Should the transfer land in the €55 million ballpark – roughly £47 million – United stand to pocket an additional £23.5 million through their sell-on arrangement. For a player they were forced to offload, that represents a tidy financial outcome. As one observer noted, this isn't a modest sell-on percentage tucked into the small print; it's a genuinely substantial slice of any fee. In a summer where United are actively hunting reinforcements, that sort of unexpected revenue could prove rather handy indeed.
