Beye Blasts Nwaneri's Commitment as Greenwood Benching Hints at Marseille Unrest

Habib Beye has launched a pointed critique of Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri, questioning the teenager's daily commitment levels as his spell at Marseille continues to underwhelm.

Nwaneri arrived at the Ligue 1 outfit on loan during the winter transfer window with hopes of securing regular first-team football after limited opportunities at the Emirates. While he marked his debut with a goal, the creative talent has since flatlined, accumulating just three league starts and warming the bench during Sunday's 1-1 stalemate with OGC Nice.

Speaking after that draw, Beye made his frustrations plain. "He's a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment," the Marseille boss told L1+. "Other players gave way more."

The manager's dissatisfaction extends beyond a single performance. Following a recent defeat to AS Monaco, Beye again took aim at Nwaneri's adaptation to French football's demands. "Ethan has great qualities, he's a great talent who needs to adapt to the intensity of Ligue 1," he explained, pinpointing defensive work-rate and counter-pressing as particular weakness. "When we analyse his performance overall there are still aspects of his game that need to be much stronger in terms of counter-pressing, his defensive efforts to win the ball back."

Beye did acknowledge the 19-year-old's potential, noting that he "scored for the national team" and that competitive minutes at club level should eventually benefit his development. Yet the underlying message was clear: the Premier League pedigree counts for little without the graft to match Ligue 1's intensity.

Greenwood's Bench Spell Raises Questions

Elsewhere at the Stade Vélodrome, former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood found himself on the bench for the Lille encounter after racking up 35 goal involvements across 42 appearances this season. When introduced with 27 minutes remaining, Beye framed the decision as precautionary.

"We've been looking at Mason since the beginning of the week; he's very limited by the injury he sustained in Lille," Beye stated. "He's been playing two matches with significant pain, we can't put him at risk."

However, Foot Mercato's reporting suggests the injury narrative may not tell the full story. According to the outlet, Greenwood was "sanctioned" and "relegated to the bench" partly due to "friction with his coach during training this week." The implication is that disciplinary measures, not medical concerns alone, influenced Beye's team selection.

Such internal tensions could prove problematic for a side chasing European qualification, particularly with their star striker now potentially at odds with management.
