Chelsea Lawyers Block Maresca's Manchester City Move as Compensation Row Rumbles On

Enzo Maresca's move to Manchester City has hit a significant snag, with Chelsea's legal representatives refusing to rubber-stamp his departure until the Blues receive what they deem appropriate compensation for losing their manager.

The Italian guided Chelsea to Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs whilst restoring them to Champions League football in the 2024/2025 campaign, only to depart midway through his second season. The crucial detail in Chelsea's favour: Maresca wasn't dismissed. With three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, the Stamford Bridge club's lawyers are now arguing that City must cough up substantial damages before any announcement can be made.

The writing was on the wall come autumn, when Maresca himself revealed to Chelsea's board that he'd already engaged in talks with City's hierarchy. Those discussions intensified once Pep Guardiola's imminent exit became clear, with City moving swiftly to secure their man for life after the legendary Spaniard.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the broad strokes two weeks ago, declaring that Maresca had secured a verbal agreement with City on a three-year deal. Yet the Italian remains unannounced, with Sky Sports now exposing the real holdup: Chelsea's compensation demand. According to reports from The Telegraph, the Blues contend that Maresca's acrimonious exit and the weeks of managerial turbulence preceding it – sparked by his revelation of City talks – "undermined their season."

The matter now rests firmly in the hands of both clubs' legal teams, with no resolution in sight just yet.

Optimism at the Etihad

Joe Cole, the Chelsea legend, has expressed confidence that City will make a seamless transition under Maresca's stewardship. "You couldn't have picked a better candidate," Cole told Football365 exclusively. "Somebody who understands the group, understands Pep Guardiola, understands the club, that has also gone away and went to a massive club and won, and got experience."

Cole expects City to remain competitive next season despite needing reinforcements. "They need to replace Bernardo Silva and John Stones, so they'll need to bring players in. But they're in a great position. I'm not worried," he added.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has similarly sounded a note of defiance. "We are far from peaked," he stated in his annual interview with the club's media channels. "We are used to – because it's in our DNA – winning. This is a club that is designed, built to win."

He continued: "Obviously with the additions we're going to make this summer, I am very confident. I think next year we're going to come back very strong, very strong. We will make sure we're going to be in an even stronger position for next season."
