Barcelona Cooling on Rashford Deal as Man Utd Eye Fresh Negotiations

Manchester United and Barcelona are preparing to return to the negotiating table over Marcus Rashford's future, with the Spanish club having developed cold feet over activating his existing purchase clause.

The England winger arrived at Camp Nou last summer on loan with a £26m option to buy, but his performances have made that fee look decidedly cheap. Across 49 appearances in all competitions this season, Rashford has delivered 14 goals and 14 assists—a return that has thoroughly vindicated Barcelona's initial gamble on the temporary deal.

Yet the Catalan outfit's chronic financial constraints mean they're now balking at stumping up the agreed fee. Instead of accepting the terms already in place, Barcelona are signalling their intention to renegotiate, hoping either to secure another loan spell or negotiate a reduced permanent fee.

According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Barcelona have "gone cool" on the original arrangement. "They want to renegotiate and see if they can possibly get him on loan again or get that fee lower so that they can sign him on a permanent," O'Rourke explained. "Rashford has really enjoyed his time at Barcelona. His priority, I think, will be to make that move permanent and stay at the Camp Nou. He's really impressed Hansi Flick as well, and he has admitted that he would like to see Rashford stay at the club."

The situation presents United with leverage. Given Rashford's scintillating form, securing £26m—or potentially more—from an alternative suitor would present no great difficulty for the Old Trafford hierarchy this summer.

Yet there's another wrinkle worth considering. Former United assistant Rene Meulensteen has suggested that Michael Carrick's permanent appointment as manager could open a "route back" to Old Trafford for the 27-year-old.

"There is a route back for Marcus Rashford because Michael Carrick knows him," Meulensteen told BOYLE Sports. "I think there is a really important conversation to be had, no two ways about it."

Meulensteen highlighted Rashford's deep roots in Manchester and his lifelong connection to the club. "Marcus has grown up as a little kid from Manchester. He's Manchester United through and through. And for whatever reason, something has made him make the decision to move away. Maybe it has been good for him to move away for a while, just to have a look at it and look back at Manchester United from the outside in. Because it will also have given him the opportunity to realise how much Man United actually means to him."

The mutual familiarity between Carrick and Rashford, Meulensteen suggested, could facilitate productive dialogue. "Because he knows Michael and Michael knows him, I think it's definitely a good conversation that they should have. And then obviously, it all depends on what exactly the expectations are from both parties."
