Rashford's Summer Shuffle: Barcelona Favoured, But Madrid's Mourinho Lurking

The Marcus Rashford transfer saga is set for another chapter this summer, with Barcelona holding the advantage in the race to land the Manchester United forward on a permanent basis – though Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho are very much in the mix.

The 28-year-old England international has made a decent fist of life at Barcelona following his season-long loan move from Old Trafford, racking up 14 goals and 10 assists across 48 appearances in all competitions, with 25 of those being starts. Respectable numbers, though hardly the stuff of legends.

The sticking point, however, is the €30m (£26m) buyout clause embedded in the temporary arrangement. Barcelona's hierarchy appear reluctant to stump up that cash, instead hoping to either haggle the figure down or engineer another loan spell for the 2026-27 campaign.

Enter Mourinho. The incoming Real Madrid boss – who oversaw Rashford during his 2016-2018 spell as Manchester United manager – is said to harbour genuine interest in reuniting with the winger at the Bernabeu. It's a move that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand, according to Football Insider.

Yet Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke reckons Barcelona remain the frontrunners. "There'll be further talks held between Barca and United to see if a deal can be thrashed out," O'Rourke explained. "If there's an opportunity to send Rashford you wouldn't rule out Mourinho doing something like that. Obviously he worked with Rashford before during his time at United between 2016 and 2018. I just don't know where he gets in that Real Madrid team, that would be the biggest question mark over that deal."

The journalist added: "We know he's probably not going to come back into the picture at Old Trafford. They will happily let him move on and I still think Barca remain in pole position to get a deal done."

Barcelona's reluctance to pay up has fuelled doubts about whether a permanent switch will materialise, leaving the La Liga champions in a commanding position to secure his services ahead of any Madrid overture.

Intriguingly, there may yet be a route back to Manchester for Rashford if circumstances align. Former United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen believes the arrival of Michael Carrick as head coach could reopen that particular door.

"There is a route back for Marcus Rashford because Michael Carrick knows him," Meulensteen told Boyle Sports. "I think there is a really important conversation to be had, no two ways about it. Marcus has grown up as a little kid from Manchester. He's Manchester United through and through. And for whatever reason, something has made him make the decision to move away."

Meulensteen suggested the loan spell might prove therapeutic for Rashford. "Maybe it has been good for him to move away for a while, just to have a look at it and look back at Manchester United from the outside in. Because it will also have given him the opportunity to realise how much Man United actually means to him."

With Carrick's appointment, fresh dialogue could prove fruitful. "Because he knows Michael and Michael knows him, I think it's definitely a good conversation that they should have. And then obviously, it all depends on what exactly the expectations are from both parties."

So there we have it: Barcelona leading the charge, Real Madrid hovering with Mourinho's track record with the player adding spice, and a slim possibility of a Manchester homecoming if the stars align. One way or another, Rashford's next destination will shape his career trajectory considerably.
