Koeman's Barcelona Warning: Letting Rashford Leave Would Be "Insane"

Ronald Koeman has issued a stark warning to Barcelona over Marcus Rashford's future, insisting the Catalan club would be making a catastrophic mistake by allowing the winger to slip through their fingers.

The former Barcelona manager watched on as Rashford lit up El Clásico on Sunday, netting a superb free kick in Barcelona's 2-0 triumph over Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou. It was a performance that crystallised Koeman's conviction: the club must activate the €30million (£26m) buy-option embedded in Rashford's season-long loan from Manchester United.

"If Barcelona let him return to Manchester United after this loan, I think they will regret it immensely," Koeman told AS. "Because €30million in the current market for a player with these characteristics, these numbers, this experience… that's a rip-off."

The numbers tell their own story. Across 47 matches in all competitions this season, Rashford has plundered 14 goals and created 14 assists—a return that underlines his impact on the pitch. Yet Koeman's admiration runs deeper than mere statistics. He highlighted the psychological toll the England international inflicts on opponents, particularly during Barcelona's LaLiga-clinching campaign.

"Rashford hurts teams. Madrid looked terrified every time he turned and ran," Koeman explained. "Against Real Madrid, he completely destroyed them on the counter-attack. The speed, the aggression, the directness, the confidence – Madrid couldn't handle him."

The former boss catalogued Rashford's multifaceted threat: his ability to stretch the defensive line, create numerical advantages through intelligent pressing, and consistently find space behind the backline. His El Clásico free kick exemplified the complete package.

"He scores a free kick in El Clásico, stretches the entire defensive line, creates numerical advantages, presses, gets in behind the defence, and yet there are people within the club who hesitate to pay €30 million? That seems insane to me," Koeman concluded.

Yet complications loom. Rashford himself has signalled his desire to remain in Catalonia, but Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick is singing a very different tune. Appointed in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim's departure, Carrick has positioned himself as Rashford's most prominent advocate within Old Trafford.

While INEOS ownership favours a permanent exit—partly motivated by Rashford's substantial wage bill—Carrick remains unconvinced. The interim boss has consistently maintained that no final decision has been made regarding the winger's status and believes Rashford retains the capacity to rediscover his best form at United.

Barcelona's current plan involves negotiating another loan extension before a permanent transfer in 2027, but Koeman's intervention suggests the clock is ticking on such compromise solutions.
