Despite formally allowing Rashford to return to Old Trafford, Barcelona's Instagram account posted a message following England's Croatia victory: "World Cup 2026 - Gordon and Rashford featured in England's 4–2 win over Croatia, with Rashford on target." The post may appear innocuous on the surface, yet it signals that the Blaugrana have not entirely moved on from the prospect of reuniting with the 28-year-old.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano confirmed on June 16 that Rashford has "formally" returned to Manchester United following the expiry of Barcelona's purchase option, while noting that the Spanish club "are still keen on keeping Marcus but only on loan" and that United are "taking their time to make decision."

Should Barcelona prove willing to negotiate, sources suggest Rashford himself remains open to a return to the Camp Nou. His World Cup showing is unlikely to dampen such speculation—quite the reverse.
