Manchester United Ready to Splash £75m on West Ham Midfielder as Deal Looks Increasingly Likely

Manchester United's hierarchy at INEOS are gearing up to make a bold move in the transfer market, with plans to table a £75million offer for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes as the summer window approaches.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has already attracted the attention of the United faithful, having impressed during West Ham's ultimately doomed campaign in the Premier League. With the Hammers' relegation confirmed, Fernandes is widely expected to seek pastures new rather than drop down to the Championship.
Preliminary discussions between United's representatives and those of Fernandes have already taken place, with the midfielder understood to be extremely eager about the prospect of joining the Old Trafford outfit. His camp has made no bones about their confidence that a deal will materialise this summer.
This move would complement United's existing business, following their acquisition of Atalanta's Ederson Silva, as INEOS continues to rebuild the midfield contingent at the club.
However, West Ham are unlikely to roll over easily, with the club holding out for closer to £80million for their young talent. The Hammers' valuation reflects their reluctance to let another promising prospect slip away on the cheap.
The race for Fernandes's signature has intensified with Real Madrid's emergence as serious contenders for his services. Should Florentino Perez secure victory in this weekend's presidential elections, Jose Mourinho is set to take the reins at the Bernabéu and has reportedly made Fernandes a priority target, keen to reunite with a fellow Portuguese star.
Despite Madrid's heavyweight appeal, Fernandes's representatives remain bullish about steering their client towards Manchester. According to Shaun Connolly's reporting on 5 June, while United are acutely aware of the competition circling, "talks are ongoing, and representatives remain confident of a deal. He is a player who is really admired by many at Old Trafford."
Ruben Martin, commenting on the situation the same day, suggested that United possess the financial firepower to make their move decisive. "United can bid aggressively, with an offer of around 75M," the Spanish journalist noted, emphasising that whilst Fernandes may not yet be a household name across Europe, his price tag certainly reflects his pedigree.
