The Week's Transfer Nonsense: Leaks That Aren't, Green Lights From Two Years Ago, and Swap Deals Nobody Wants

England's Sleep Crisis That Isn't
The Sun has discovered something troubling: England players are apparently at risk of taking sleeping pills during the World Cup in North America and Mexico. Except they're not. The outlet ran a piece featuring a sleep expert warning against something nobody's actually doing. It's a curious way to fill column inches—manufacturing anxiety about a problem that doesn't exist.
When 'Leak' Means 'News'
Someone at The Sun has decided that "leak" is now interchangeable with "announcement" or "happened," and they're running with it. The headline screamed: "Man Utd chief leaks Red Devils' summer transfer plans with big spending to continue after sealing Ederson signing."
What actually occurred? Omar Berrada, Manchester United's chief executive, gave an interview on the club's official website. He said the club wanted "a mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also players who are doing very well outside the Premier League." That's not a leak. That's a CEO doing his job. But it certainly makes for a spicier headline than "CEO Speaks Publicly About Transfer Strategy."
Liverpool's Impossible Puzzle
The Daily Mirror identified Liverpool's pursuit of a Mohamed Salah replacement, flagging "one major issue" as the obstacle. That issue? RB Leipzig don't want to sell Yan Diomande, and they're asking £112m—a fee Liverpool aren't keen to pay after spending over £450m last summer on players including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
So Liverpool are desperately keen, Leipzig don't want to sell, and the asking price is astronomical. But sure, that's just "one major issue" to overcome. It's only the entire deal collapsing under its own weight.
The Phantom Green Light
The Daily Mirror and Daily Express both ran with: "Ruben Amorim has given green light to Michael Carrick over £80m Man Utd transfer move." The quotes? They're from Amorim discussing Mateus Fernandes back in August 2024, when he was still Sporting manager. That was two years ago. Amorim has since been sacked and replaced by Carrick at United. But why let chronology get in the way of a transfer story?
The Jacquet Non-Story
Liverpool's Echo produced a 600-word piece revealing that Jeremy Jacquet will probably make his Liverpool debut under Andoni Iraola rather than his previous manager. It's the kind of article that exists purely because a manager change happened. Nothing particularly newsworthy, but it fills the space.
The Swap Deal Fantasy
Finally, the Daily Express presented Arsenal with a "complex Marcus Rashford swap deal" involving Piero Hincapie. Here's how it would work: Arsenal sign Hincapie permanently from Barcelona, Barcelona activates their buy option on Rashford, then Barcelona immediately sell Rashford to Arsenal. Two loan deals become permanent just so the clubs can swap players. Both players would need to agree, despite preferring to stay where they are.
The piece admits it's "complicated" but calls it "feasible in principle"—which is tabloid speak for "we've invented this scenario with zero basis in reality, but we're running it anyway."
Welcome to transfer season.
