Fernandes Still Weighing His Options as United and Spurs Battle it Out

The summer saga surrounding West Ham's Mateus Fernandes shows no signs of reaching a conclusion, with the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder still to commit to either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur.

Following the Hammers' relegation from the Premier League, the club have accepted that their prized asset will depart, yet they're holding firm on their £85million valuation and showing no appetite to negotiate downwards.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has cut through the noise of competing reports to suggest the player himself remains genuinely torn. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano outlined a straightforward situation: West Ham have made it clear to the midfielder's representatives that the highest bidder will secure the deal. The outcome, therefore, rests not on Fernandes' preference but on which club is willing to pay most.

Manchester United, operating under Michael Carrick's management, continue their pursuit despite Tottenham's sustained efforts to muscle in on the deal. Spurs have been active in their approach, pushing both the player and his agent, yet United refuse to surrender the chase. Romano stressed that this remains a genuinely open contest, with neither club ready to step aside.

The intrigue deepens when considering the calibre of interest beyond these two. Real Madrid held preliminary conversations with Fernandes during discussions involving Jose Mourinho three weeks prior, whilst Liverpool placed a call in late May to assess his availability. Multiple other clubs have similarly circled, recognising his potential.

Owen Backs Fernandes for Old Trafford

Former United striker Michael Owen has weighed into the debate, arguing that Fernandes represents precisely what the Red Devils require. Speaking to Metro on 12 June, Owen highlighted the need to fill the void left by Casemiro's diminishing role and suggested Fernandes ticks all the necessary boxes.

Owen praised the midfielder's performances throughout last season and emphasised his youth—a crucial factor when clubs are investing between £80-100million. He pointed to the prospect of Fernandes partnering academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo in midfield as particularly appealing, whilst noting the player's likely eagerness to escape Championship football following West Ham's drop in status.

"If it were me, I would be getting Fernandes from West Ham," Owen concluded, naming him his first choice target ahead of alternatives like Elliott Anderson, Alexis Mac Allister, or Lloyd Scott.
