Fernandes Favours Old Trafford: Man Utd Edge Spurs in Race for West Ham Midfielder

The summer transfer window is shaping up to be a three-way battle for West Ham's Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Manchester United currently holding the upper hand despite fresh interest from Tottenham and Real Madrid.

Following West Ham's relegation from the Premier League, Fernandes has become available for a summer move. The Hammers are holding out for £80million, though United are pushing for a deal closer to £60million. That valuation gap could prove crucial as the window progresses.

Fernandes himself has been crystal clear about his ambitions. The 24-year-old is extremely keen on joining Manchester United and working under Michael Carrick, with fellow Portuguese star Bruno Fernandes reportedly lending his backing to the move. Sources suggest he is not currently enthusiastic about a switch to Tottenham, despite the north London club's overtures.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has nonetheless moved to make his pitch. Tottenham have recently made contact with Fernandes's agent Jorge Mendes to explore the possibility of bringing him to the club, with the Italian manager personally interested in the midfielder. The club is prepared to spend significantly if Fernandes can be convinced to change his mind.

Manchester United have maintained their long-standing dialogue with Mendes and remain the favourites for his signature. Real Madrid have also been considering the player following discussions at board level earlier this month.

Tottenham are reportedly hoping the valuation dispute between United and West Ham could yet work in their favour, potentially creating an opening should negotiations stall. For now, though, United are in pole position—provided they can bridge the £20million gap with the Hammers.
