Ratcliffe Eyes Tonali Swap as Ugarte Heads for the Exit Door

Sir Jim Ratcliffe appears ready to cash in on Manuel Ugarte's Old Trafford misadventure, with a potential pathway opening up to acquire Newcastle's Sandro Tonali in the process.

The Manchester United co-owner has seen enough of the Uruguayan midfielder to conclude his time at the club should end this summer. Having watched Ugarte in the flesh during United's recent Premier League clash with Leeds at Old Trafford, Ratcliffe's view from the directors' box was decidedly unimpressed by the midfielder who arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for £50.5million in 2024.

INEOS chief Ratcliffe has made it clear that Ugarte should be moved on, with the player now formally available for transfer. Newcastle United have registered their interest in the midfielder, and United are willing to listen to approaches in the £35m-£40m bracket. The Magpies view Ugarte as a potential solution to shield their backline, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Tonali's continued presence on Tyneside.

The Italian's future at St. James' Park remains a question mark, with United among the clubs monitoring his situation closely. Should Newcastle table a £40m offer for Ugarte, United would be inclined to green-light the departure. Such an arrangement could even facilitate a player-plus-cash formula that would see Tonali head south to Manchester, providing both clubs with useful flexibility on their financial and FFP fronts.

However, Newcastle aren't the only suitors circling. Aston Villa, themselves Champions League-bound, have cast an admiring eye over the former PSG man. Further afield, Italian interest is substantial too, with Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli all keeping tabs on Ugarte—the Turin outfit reportedly leading that particular queue.

Michael Carrick's side appear set to secure a top-five Premier League finish this season, but Ratcliffe's restructuring ambitions suggest further squad evolution lies ahead.
