Man Utd Step Up Chase for Newcastle's Lewis Hall as £60m Left-Back Eyes Old Trafford Move

Manchester United are turning up the heat in their bid to sign Newcastle United's Lewis Hall this summer, with the talented left-back understood to be receptive to the move, sources close to the club suggest.

Having secured Champions League football for next season, the Red Devils are now actively shopping for reinforcements across multiple positions. The signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva is already in the bag, with INEOS keen to add further midfield quality to Erik ten Hag's squad.

A new left-back remains high on United's shopping list, particularly given the current options at the club. Luke Shaw and Diego Leon are the recognised specialists in the role, though Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu offer additional flexibility. Still, the hierarchy believes another addition is warranted in that department.

Enter Lewis Hall. The Newcastle winger-cum-left-back has caught United's eye as a prospect capable of playing both positions—and he's one of the Premier League's most promising young talents to boot. The 21-year-old put in solid work for the Magpies last season, racking up 47 appearances with a goal and two assists to his name.

Newcastle have slapped a £60million price tag on their academy graduate, but the encouraging news for United is that Hall apparently views a move to Old Trafford as a natural next step in his development. The prospect of Champions League football—which he experienced with Newcastle this term—is reportedly a significant draw.

United had previously been exploring a deal for Germany international Nathaniel Brown, but that avenue has now closed off with the left-back set for Bayern Munich instead. The Old Trafford hierarchy has subsequently pivoted their attention towards Hall, viewing him as their primary target for the position.

Sources within the club are bullish about their chances, with growing confidence that Hall would be willing to make the switch. Plans are reportedly being drawn up for a concerted push in the weeks ahead.

The situation has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. England manager Thomas Tuchel notably left Hall out of his 2026 World Cup squad despite the youngster's impressive domestic form, a decision that has raised eyebrows in certain quarters.

Former Tottenham and England striker Gary Lineker was among those to question the omission, telling Netflix's The Rest is Football podcast: "I think the best left-back has not been picked: Lewis Hall. It's fair to say at this point we would all pick different squads, it's one person's opinion and that's what counts. But there are certain players in there that I think have been hard done by, Lewis Hall for me."

Lineker went on to defend his assessment, noting Hall's performance against Yamal: "Did he see Lewis Hall against Yamal? He didn't give him a kick. He's been really unlucky."
